What can cause circulation problems?
Talk to our staff if you feel dizzy during your workout. The good news is that there's usually nothing serious behind it. Circulatory problems can occur, for example, if you exercise too intensively.
For newcomers in particular, start slowly and gradually increase the intensity. Because your body needs a while to adapt to the new movement.
Causes of dizziness during sports
When you exercise, your body needs more energy, fluids and oxygen than usual. If any of these are lacking, it not only affects performance, but it can also cause discomfort.
Cause Fluid Loss: When you exercise intensively, you lose a lot of fluid through sweat. Sweating is necessary to cool the body heated by exercise. Incidentally, well-trained people sweat more than less athletic people during the same amount of exertion. The amount varies. But it is important to compensate for fluid loss. You should not drink something only when you feel thirsty.
To make sure you take in enough fluid, you should drink half a liter of water in the period before your workout (starting about two hours before). During exercise itself, about a quarter of a liter of water per quarter of an hour is a good value. And drinking is also the order of the day after your workout.
If you exercise for longer than an hour, you should drink an isotonic beverage instead of water. For example, an apple spritzer (consisting of juice and three times the amount of water), in which you add a pinch of table salt.
Cause low blood sugar: Many people love to do their workout first thing in the morning, before breakfast. If you feel dizzy in such a situation, empty energy stores could be the cause. This causes blood sugar levels to drop - your body becomes hypoglycemic.
Possible consequences are dizziness, but also trembling, palpitations and nausea. You should therefore take a piece of banana or an energy bar with you and eat it immediately if you feel dizziness. In general, it is recommended to eat something two hours before training to avoid hypoglycemia. Complex carbohydrates are most beneficial.
Cause low blood pressure: dizziness during exercise can also be related to a drop in blood pressure. Some people have basically low blood pressure, but sometimes the blood pressure drops all of a sudden. For example, if you get up very suddenly, have not slept enough, or you end your sports activity very abruptly.
The dizziness occurs because the brain is not sufficiently supplied with blood. Here you can take preventive action: Brush massages and alternating showers stimulate the circulation. In addition, make sure you drink enough. You should avoid heavy food and alcohol.
Cause of poor breathing technique: We rarely pay attention to our breathing - we just breathe. About 30,000 times a day. But in sports, proper breathing is especially important because: The more you move, the more oxygen your body needs. But if you breathe shallowly and quickly, you take in less oxygen, produce less carbon dioxide and risk feeling dizzy. In addition, the muscles in the neck and shoulders are put under greater strain.
In superficial breathing, we do not use our body's most important breathing muscle, the diaphragm. However, this is recommended because it allows us to take in more oxygen.
We can recognize "correct" breathing by the fact that our abdomen bulges forward when we inhale and flattens out again when we exhale. In this way, we breathe calmly, relaxing the shoulder and neck muscles. The muscles also benefit because they are better supplied with oxygen. Talk to the trainers at Holmes Place clubs about suitable exercises for deep diaphragmatic breathing.
If you experience dizziness: take a break
If you experience dizziness during your workout, take a break immediately. Sit down for a moment or take a few steps. Important: Keep your head above your heart - so you should not lie down. Drink some water and bite into a banana or energy bar to provide your body with carbohydrates.
Important: If you are unsure where the dizziness is coming from, contact the trainers. This is also true if you feel weak, short of breath, have chest pain, or have trouble seeing or speaking. In such a case, you should get a medical examination to rule out a serious illness.
