Chic & simple gym hairstyles

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror while you're working out and were annoyed by your tousled hair? Our looks certainly aren't high on our list of priorities when going to the gym (and they shouldn't), but for many, looking good while working out is important. And a solid gym hairstyle can be functional too.

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror while you're working out and were annoyed by your tousled hair? Our looks certainly aren't high on our list of priorities when going to the gym (and they shouldn't), but for many, looking good while working out is important. And a solid gym hairstyle can be functional too.

It is questionable whether there is a single long-haired person reading this who hasn't been distracted by hair falling in your face in the midst of a yoga practice. There's probably not a single long-haired person reading this who didn't think there had to be more than just a high bun or ponytail to try out. For those looking for handy hairstyles for gyms, these two step-by-step instructions are perfect:

A stylish updo: Dutch crown braid

Twisted updos with a bit of texture are always beautiful, but they look particularly good as a gymnastic hairstyle. Remember, even if you screw it up, it's okay — it's not meant to be perfect. Here is how to do it:

1. Brush your hair to make sure it's free of tangles and split it on the left side.

2. Put your hair back on the right side of your head temporarily so that it doesn't get in the way when you work on the left side of your hair.

3. Next, take a small part of the hair from the left and divide it into three parts. Then take the strand that is closest to your face and place it under the middle strand. Next, take the outer strand and place it under the middle strand.

4. Take the strand of hair closest to your face as you collect more unused hair in the braid and place it under the middle strand of hair. The same goes for the strand that is farthest from your face. Make sure that the strands are neat and evenly strong.

5. Leave your hair at the very back of your head, as it won't get in your way during training. The hair that remains at the back of the head gives the whole thing a softer look.

6. Continue this process of collecting and braiding small amounts of hair until you get to the end of the braid.

7. Tie the end with a hair-free elastic band.

8. Next, repeat this on the right side of your hair, starting with the section of hair closest to your face.

9. Use the same method to collect more small amounts of hair, and apply small amounts over your hair at a time.

10. Once the hair is braided on the right side of the head, tie it with a scrunchy. Both sides should now be evenly braided.

11. Finally, both braided sides are put together directly at the back of the head to form a seamless crown.

For a perfect, imperfect look: The messy French braid

When it comes to that elegant hairstyle for the gym, messiness is a virtue. The strong, beautiful braids are beautifully easy to design. The hairbrushes are ready and off you go:

1. First, brush your hair until it is free of tangles. Then take a central section of hair, leaving out the sides.

2. As with Dutch crown braiding, separate the midsection of your hair into three segments of equal volume. Take the right strand and place it under the middle strand. Take the left hair segment and now place it under the middle braid section.

3. Continue braiding this way while adding a small volume of hair from each side of the hair each time you move down the head.

4. Leave no gaps and move further down the hair, continue this process of braiding until you get to the end of the hair.

5. Use a scrunchy to tie the end of the braid Now take the piece of hair that is directly under the hair tie and bring it up and down through the middle of the braid and be careful not to pull the unbraided hair together at the neck.

6. Use the ends of the hair to wrap around the end of the braid by using the hair as an elastic band and securing it under the wrapped circle you've made.

7. The hair that is not braided will give the look a natural, messy look. Voila! A gym-compatible French braid.
