Have yourself a merry Vegan Christmas

From food to gifts, a vegan Christmas is easy to do with a little preparation and a little imagination. Here are five easy ways to treat yourself to a happy vegan Christmas this year.

Even for the most experienced, it is not easy to create a completely vegan Christmas. But with a bit of research and imagination, you can have a celebration that's good for your stomach and heart.

1 — Plan a vegan Christmas dinner

Before you cringe at the thought of a Christmas without traditional turkey, learn about vegan Christmas dishes. There are so many great recipes and products that will delight even the most hard-boiled meat lovers. Roast vegetables in oil instead of butter and replace dairy products with plant-based alternatives when cooking. The variety of meat substitutes and vegan party snacks in stores these days is amazing.

2 — Check vegan clothes

The most popular Christmas gifts include new clothes. But these can be ethically problematic. Avoid real fur and leather — and don't assume that everything is “wrong.” You'll find beautiful faux fur scarves and high-quality handbags, belts and shoes without harming anyone. If you're giving knitwear as a gift, pay attention to Angora wool. PETA recently revealed that rabbits are cruelly plucked to produce this animal wool. Fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, H&M and SOS have already committed themselves to stop using Angora in the future.

3 — Avoid cosmetics tested on animals

There are so many ethical cosmetic products out there that it's easy to Boycott animal testing. However, this issue is confusing for many as there is an international legal loophole. Despite the ban on animal testing in Europe, it is still a legal requirement in China that all imported cosmetics must be tested on animals. That means that many brands that we think are “safe” have parent companies that carry out gruesome tests abroad. PETA has created a great list of vegan beauty and body care products — saving you time and saving even more animals this Christmas.

4 — Remember the true spirit of giving

We remember it every year — but do we also act accordingly? Kindness, generosity and mindfulness are the true values. Use this magical time of year to show what's important to you. Change the narrative of giving and receiving gifts in your environment by making it clear that unforgettable experiences are more important to you than material things. Maybe you're using the money you would otherwise spend on gifts, for a wellness weekend, a romantic dinner, or a fitness club membership for the new year.

If you still want to give physical gifts, choose the more sustainable options we've mentioned above. Wrap them up in old newspapers, magazines, or scraps of fabric to avoid waste.

‍

We know that not everyone is ready to take all the steps for a completely vegan Christmas — but don't take it personally and don't impose your values on anyone. This time is stressful, and it can be hard to implement vegan and waste-free changes right away. But baby steps are important, and your actions and positive energy can inspire even the most stubborn relatives to make more ethical decisions this festive season.

Have a happy vegan Christmas!
