Where the passion fruit gets its name from

The plant species, whose best-known representatives are the sweet grenadilla (dark red skin) and the passion fruit (yellow-green skin), is native to the subtropical regions of Africa and South America. It is the fruit of a climbing plant whose huge flowers are absolutely spectacular. They are also what the plant owes its name passion fruit: missionaries, looking at the flower, found similarities with the passion of Jesus. They recognized the nails of the cross, the crown of thorns and stigmata.


Power fruit with healing powers

Don't be put off by the outward appearance of passion fruit. The more wrinkled the firm, thick skin is, the more ripe it is. And then provides plenty of vitamins A, B and C, plus iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. And it goes further, because the seeds contain valuable unsaturated fatty acids, as well as beta-carotene and folic acid. In addition, there are many fibers that are good for digestion.


With its vitamin content, passion fruit is ideal for strengthening the immune system. Studies also show that it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. With its high antioxidant content, it can also lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and reduce high blood pressure. There are suggestions that it may even have a soothing and healing effect on asthma, cancer and osteoporosis. 


Enjoy pure or as an ingredient in salads and desserts

With just 67 calories per 100 grams, passion fruit is also a real lightweight - perfect for adding its typical sweet and sour note to a wide variety of dishes. Of course, it also tastes good on its own: you can simply cut it in half and scoop out the pulp and seeds. But it is also a wonderful ingredient in fruit salads, juices and desserts. For example, in combination with natural yogurt, to which it adds an exotic note. 


Exotic and delicious: Turmeric Passion Fruit Elixir

Something very special is the turmeric passion fruit elixir. It consists of the pulp of three passion fruits, a tablespoon of freshly grated ginger, half a teaspoon of turmeric powder, the zest of an organic lemon, a pinch of black pepper and two tablespoons of honey. Mix everything well and then let it rest for 30 minutes. The elixir is wonderful as an exotic condiment for mueslis, puddings, smoothies or yogurt. It will keep in the refrigerator for a few days.  


Homemade juice

Of course, you can also make juice from passion fruit. It tastes slightly sour and is therefore wonderfully refreshing, especially in summer. You will need two large passion fruits or passion fruit, a liter of water, three tablespoons of sugar and a little milk (alternatively: oat milk). Cut the fruit open, scoop out the pulp and put it in a blender with a little water. Puree, adding the water and sugar. Later add milk to taste. Then press the mixture through a sieve and pour into a bottle or jug. It tastes best when well chilled!
