There is something very special about mineral makeup. But what exactly is that? And what is the science behind the benefits? We take a look at one of the biggest highlights in the beauty world.

Your idea of mineral makeup may go back to memories of formerly chalky powder and crumbly foundation — but the days of orange stripes and thick layers of makeup are long gone. The new age of mineral makeup is filled with products that are both natural and breathable — like a beautiful second skin. So how do they differ and who should use them? Here is what you need to know about it.

What is mineral makeup?

All beauty products that consist of tiny minerals — from mica to zinc, from talc to titanium oxide — are considered mineral makeup. The minerals are ground to an ultra-fine consistency and combined with pigments. It doesn't contain oils, waxes, preservatives, parabens, fragrances, or other synthetic ingredients that can clog your pores and irritate your skin.

What are the benefits of using mineral makeup?

You may have heard the term mineral makeup floating around beauty and wellness areas. Like many of us, you may also ask yourself whether it lives up to the hype. Here are the facts:

● It is gentle on your skin

Thanks to the lack of artificial disgusting ingredients, mineral makeup doesn't interfere with the natural process that takes place in your pores. This is good news for anyone who is prone to acne breakouts or sensitive skin. And if you want to wear makeup after a medical procedure, for example, you're on the safe side with minerals.

● The finish is beautifully satin

Many mineral makeups contain mica, also known as “natural glitter.” Mica is the name of a group of silicate materials that are ground into the powder that is responsible for that satin-like sheen. This naturally produced ingredient is often used in organic products and works in harmony with all skin types to maintain that popular glow.

● It provides light sun protection (but please still wear sunscreen as well)

You can achieve a flawless complexion while keeping your skin young when you wear mineral makeup. Titanium dioxide is an effective sunscreen and zinc oxide protects your skin from the sun. However, it is unclear how much makeup is needed to benefit from this protection. Dermatologist Francesca Fusco explains on WebMD: “No mineral makeup is going to give you enough SPF to protect you from harmful ultraviolet rays.” If you've already applied sunscreen in the morning and it's a hot day, a touch of mineral powder can provide an extra layer of protection.

It has anti-inflammatory properties

If you've ever used Kalamin Lotion to relieve a rash, you've basically applied zinc oxide, which is colored with iron oxide. Both are present in mineral makeup and are known for their skin-soothing properties. Here, too, it is still unclear how many of the products are needed to achieve this effect.

What are the disadvantages of wearing mineral makeup?

One thing to keep in mind is that mineral makeup doesn't stick to the skin as long as traditional makeup. That's because it doesn't have the usual binders and “sticky” ingredients that are required for it. It's also limited in shades, so it could be harder to find the perfect look for your skin tone.

Is mineral makeup really the best choice?

When it comes down to it, mineral makeup really lives up to its hype. Finer products are much gentler on the face and particularly good for problematic skin, such as acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Does it also work when playing sports?

As a gentler method of beauty care, mineral makeup can be a lighter alternative when working out when you want to apply some color.

However, we always recommend sweating with cleansed skin to ensure pores are clean and not clogged. Have a look at our Top 3 reasons why makeup and training should not be combined.
