Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and exercising is of course recommended in every age group.
However, the aspect of fitness is often neglected, especially among older people. Sometimes because they no longer feel physically able to do so, sometimes because they are unsure which sport is right for them or also because they believe that it is no longer useful to start building muscles and the like at an advanced age. In reality, however, exactly the opposite is true: Sport, exercise and mobility are incredibly important, especially for older people. This article is intended to dispel some prejudices, give tips for idealistic sports and show the benefits of training in old age.
There are many good reasons to exercise. However, some are particularly relevant at an advanced age. As drastic as it sounds, inactivity is unfortunately one of the main risk factors for various illnesses or even mortality. Sufficient exercise therefore helps to increase life expectancy, reduce excess weight, improve the cardiovascular system and thus reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Another important point in old age is the issue of balance. Here, too, training helps to sharpen your sense of balance. This normally decreases with age, which can lead to falls or accidents more often. The combination of balance exercises, muscle building, mobility exercises and stretching can optimally promote mobility and safety in old age. Mental health is also promoted through sport, new exercises and stimuli make the brain more active, you are more balanced and social contacts are also maintained when exercising in community. In the area of the bones, the right exercise is suitable as a prevention of osteoporosis and some joint diseases. Good fitness can also reduce the risk of diabetes, dementia and certain types of cancer.
In principle, you can of course do any sport that you enjoy. Especially if you know the movement patterns from earlier times, they can often be retrieved more easily in old age. However, regardless of whether it is a new or familiar discipline, it is advisable to slowly get the body used to the load again and make sure that it is done correctly. Especially in old age, joint problems due to incorrect exercise can be a major burden on the body. Our highly qualified experts in the Holmes Place Premium Clubs will be happy to give you tips and correct your posture if necessary. In principle, sports with high joint and bone loads, such as ball sports with many abrupt stop movements, are more likely to be discouraged. On the other hand, yoga, swimming, walking, cycling or gymnastics with lots of stretching exercises are particularly suitable. This usually involves training in a way that is easy on the joints and focuses on mobility, motor skills and targeted strength building. Exactly the things that are also needed in everyday life and that can be specifically strengthened through functional training. You can also get special motivation from group courses, as everything in the community is twice as much fun! Holmes Place offers you a wide range of courses for this purpose, all led by experienced instructors. This means that there is something suitable for every taste and fitness level, such as yoga, Pilates or courses specifically to strengthen the core muscles.

If you are new to exercising, please be sure to have a doctor check you out in advance. Especially if you already have pre-existing conditions or complaints. Even those who are a bit more experienced in fitness are well advised to get regular checkups. For example, in addition to the general state of health, the performance of the heart is also examined using a stress ECG. In this way, the optimal training intensity and frequency can be determined. Regardless of which sport, ensure a moderate load and slowly work your way up to the next level of difficulty. If you experience pain or discomfort, stop training. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Our experienced trainers at Holmes Place are always available to answer your individual needs and questions.
