If doctors packaged the benefits of exercise in a handy little pill, there would be queues the length of the Great Wall of China outside doctors' offices and people would be scrambling for it. It's completely free, it works right away, and you don't need a prescription to reap the benefits of a workout.
So you know that exercise makes you happier and healthier — that's what science says, after all. What remains unclear is the recommended dose. The hardest question is how many times a week should you work out? Should you come out of a HIIT class 5 times a week with wobbly rubber legs or is a consistent Pilates class every Sunday enough?
Let's look at the facts.
According to the World Health Organization If you are between 18 and 64 years of age, you should A) do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week or B) at least 75 minutes of high-intensity physical activity, or C) an equivalent of both.
It's easy to spread that out over the week. Basically, the goal is to get your body moving for 30 minutes five times a week. A moderate-intensity exercise should noticeably increase your heart rate and respiration. You might be sweating but you can still chat with a friend.
Examples of moderate-intensity exercises include:
To increase your workload (especially during weeks when you may not have enough time to work out on five different days), you can incorporate a few intensive workouts into your routine. You should breathe heavily and quickly with vigorous movement, and you won't be able to converse with your friend unless you stop to take a breath. A few ideas:
There is no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to how much exercise we should have. The more the better, as long as you give yourself enough time to rest. While you may not always have time to hit the gym, there are still plenty of ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine.
Too much sitting is repeatedly described as society's “silent killer,” which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Get more exercise into your workday by taking a walk during your lunch break, using the stairs instead of the elevator, or jumping off the bus in front of your stop and walking the rest of the way (or cycling to work instead).
