Les Mills - Together Strong with Group Fitness

Who is Les Mills?

It all started with a gold medal. Leslie “Les” Roy Mills, (*1934 in Auckland, New Zealand) was a successful athlete for over two decades. He competed in shot put, discus and weightlifting events and took part in as many as 4 Olympics. In 1966, he won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games, in discus. Two years later, in 1968, he opened his first gym and later went on to become the mayor of his home town for 8 years.

A Great Idea

Both his wife and his two children also competed in the Olympics and/or Commonwealth Games. His son Phillip, (*1955 in Auckland, New Zealand) in the 1990’s, had started developing a series of exercise-to-music workout programs for his father's fitness club chain. In 1990, he released the first program, Pump™, and went on to found his own company in 1997, LesMills International, named after his dad. BODYPUMP, was the first program to be distributed worldwide, and many others followed suit, including Bodybalance, Bodycombat, Bodyjam, Bodystep, Bodyvive, RPM, CxWorx, Sh'Bam and the GRIT Series (30min high intense core workout).

What’s new?

In 2014, LesMills has just launched, “Born to Move”, a program for children of different age groups, ranging from 2 to 16 years old. Soon, LesMills will also start its first nutrition program.

LesMills classes are available at your local Holmes Place club too, but as with any Les Mills Group Fitness Class, please check the classes schedule online or at your local reception desk.
