Here you can find out why training in the cold has great benefits and how to get the most out of your workout in winter:

Hands up, who wants to voluntarily exchange their thick, cuddly blanket and large mug of hot tea during the cold months?! Yes, it's not easy to get yourself up to train at sub-zero temperatures, but that could be extremely beneficial. Dress warmly and get out into the cold — here's why it's worth it:

1. You burn more calories
Chills alone burn calories, so when you work out in icy climates, your body uses more so that it can control your temperature in these cold conditions. There are different types of fat tissue in the body that are immediately attacked by the cold — in the colors white and brown (and a few shades in between). White adipose tissue is unwanted body fat, while brown adipose tissue is metabolically active and burns calories. Scientists have proven that the problematic white adipose tissue can be converted into brown if you expose yourself to the colder temperatures in winter.

2. Your heart is happier
When you're cold, your heart works faster to distribute blood throughout the body. As long as you're healthy and exercise regularly, this endurance workout can strengthen your heart and give your body more stamina for future training.

3. This increases your emotional well-being
Think of a fresh walk in the park, with clear air and light snowfall; refreshing, uplifting and stress-relieving. If you incorporate these elements into your workout, especially when the winter sun is shining, you can ward off seasonal depression. Depression often occurs in the darker, colder months. Your body is working to warm up while your endorphin levels are increased. This will make you feel lighter and happier after your cool workout.

4. Become a warm-up professional
On freezing cold winter days, there is no limit to perfecting your warm-up technique. A proper warm-up keeps the body loose and flexible during periods of frost. This not only ensures that you keep yourself warm, but also prevents painful sprains and dislocations. Run on the spot or jump jacks for a few minutes so your heart can pump blood to the muscles.

Are you already enjoying winter workouts? There is nothing better than a beautiful blush of cheeks paired with an intense wave of fresh, cool air. However, don't forget about your safety. Here are a few tips to consider before working out in the cold:

  • Drink a lot. Your body still sweats even at lower temperatures, it's just that sweat is simply released faster in cool, dry air. Drink plenty of water before, during and after your winter workout — don't wait until you get thirsty.
  • Wear lots of layers. The fat winter jacket doesn't really make running easier. Instead, wear light, loose layers of clothing that don't let the heat out of the body. The first layer should consist of a synthetic material that quickly wicks moisture away from the body. The next layer should be insulating (wool and fleece are better at retaining heat in the body than cotton) and the outermost layer should be wind and water resistant.
  • Cover your extremities. Don't give the cold a chance! Cover ears and hands with a hat and gloves. If your skin starts to feel numb or ache, especially around your nose and chin, it's best to return home.
