Have you ever heard of journaling? This is the modern form of journaling, and it has been very trendy for some time now. And rightly so, because journaling helps writers calm down, promotes concentration and brings more mindfulness to life. And a whole lot more.

What is journaling?

It would be too easy to translate it as just “writing a diary.” Because there is much more to journaling. While you primarily write down everything you've experienced in the journal, journaling is about recording your feelings and feelings about what you've experienced. In this way, you learn a lot about your goals and values at the same time. And you learn to notice more moments.

This is also a lesson in mindfulness. Because if you write down your thoughts about the day in the evening, you pay more attention to what you are experiencing during the day and deal more with your feelings and thoughts. He then takes stock in the evening, and this can increase satisfaction. What's more: If you've ever experienced something stressful, it helps to write down your thoughts about it. This brings clarity and a new look at the situation.

journaling methods

There are many options for journaling. Find the one that's right for you. This is very well known:

Success Diary: In the evening, the aim is to write down everything that you have achieved particularly well: goals you have achieved, wonderful experiences and positive results. You decide for yourself in which form you write it down and which events you choose. Professional as well as private ones count. Be sure to really write something down every day. After some time, you'll notice how often you have small or big successes. This reduces self-doubt.

It works in a very similar way

Gratitude Journal: So much happens in our lives that we can forget something. And that goes for positive things too. It is often small moments that we miss. Yet they in particular are often very valuable. These are exactly the moments that you record in your gratitude journal. But it also has room for great things that you're thankful for: You're healthy, have a great partnership, and healthy kids. There are friends who are there for you. You can afford good food and a nice apartment... If you think about it a bit, you'll think of a lot more things to be thankful for. There are also the small moments mentioned above: A stranger gave you a smile, the boss praised you... Gratitude can change your life. It makes you happy, optimistic and healthy, it improves relationships and: It makes you more resistant to stress.

It is well-known and popular Bullet Journal: This is a book that can help you to organize yourself better. The name “Bullet” comes from English and stands for the “bullet points” that appear in it. You can use a normal notebook and then either set outline points yourself or work with different colors. For example, you can sort tasks or appointments or highlight ideas or successes. If you like, you can also draw or stick stickers — just the way you like it. There are bullet journals with prepared pages to buy. This also applies to journaling in general. For example, the 6-minute diary, which is available in bookstores, is very well known.

Less well known in general, but a classic of journaling is the so-called: “Stream of consciousness”. The vocabulary comes from literary studies and describes the unchecked writing down of the things you think. Just start writing. These can be complete sentences, but also keywords. Everything is allowed — there is no wrong and no right here. It's not easy at first, but if you don't put yourself under pressure, the words will start flowing out of you after a while. Try it out!

More journaling methods

Effective is also the Weekly review — Here you take stock once a week and write down what pleasant and less pleasant experiences you had, what you are thankful for and what you succeeded in doing well. This is how you keep an eye on your goals: Which goal have I already come closer to? You will also learn to live more and more in the moment and to perceive situations intensively. You might barely think of anything at first, but that changes after a few weeks.

If you are short on time, this can also help you 5 minute journal do a good service. In it, you answer three questions a day in the morning and two in the evening. This is also about gratitude and about things that you want to achieve or that you have succeeded well or not so well. In addition, there is a daily affirmation for the beginning of the day, which you should write down. For example: “I'm good just the way I am. ”

Morning pages: They are perfect for anyone who wants to train their “creativity muscle.” It's about spending a few minutes every morning writing down what's on your mind. It's not that easy, because some people are reluctant to fill blank pages. Anyone who gets involved and has a bit of patience will be amazed at what “flows out” of them!

Journaling with finished books

You can buy beautifully designed journaling books at bookstores, but you can also design them yourself. Because it is your journal that accompanies you on your journey and will soon be of great importance to you. Working with this helps you to become more mindful and self-care.

If you want to do even more for yourself, you can book a meditation class with Holmes Place. Here you will learn to concentrate on your breath and let go of stress. Our trainers will guide you through the entire process. It's really worth getting involved in, because meditation is really helpful! Yoga is also an effective way to learn to switch off better.
