Herniated intervertebral discs are a common cause of neck, back, arm, or leg pain. Can you exercise if you have any of the symptoms associated with hernias? You can, and with the right guidance, you should too.
symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the location of the herniated disc.
Low back pain occurs, although it is important to stress that low back pain is common, affects around 20% of the population and is not always the result of a herniated disc.
Herniated discs can compress a spinal nerve and cause leg and foot pain (sciatica) and/or back pain, numbness, tingling, changes in sensitivity, and muscle weakness. The herniated disc may be caused by effort, but it is common for the patient not to remember a specific activity or event that triggered the symptoms.
diagnosis
It is important to confirm the exact location and current condition of the intervertebral disc.
To do this, contact your doctor, who can recommend an X-ray, MRI, or CT scan. Although the X-ray is part of the examination for back or leg pain, the herniated disc is not observed in this examination because it does not affect any bones. The ideal examination for your diagnosis is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or, alternatively, computed tomography (CT). In some cases, studying nerve conduction and EMG may be useful.
After excluding other causes of the symptoms and when diagnosing a herniated intervertebral disc, it was found that in more than 60% of cases, there is a spontaneous solution within 2 to 3 months.
When it comes to sport, there are inevitable factors that must be considered.
Physical exercise as a form of therapy is highly recommended for restoring the affected area, which means that the exercise is primarily aimed at functional impairment of the trauma. Therefore, a functional rehabilitation program should always be designed individually, also taking into account the location and type of hernia. It is important to guide individuals towards postural balance or visual misalignment perception in the vertical direction that encourages them to use more appropriate body mechanics in their everyday life and to minimize spinal overloads. It is necessary to train joint amplitudes and muscle strengthening. The painful exercises or postures should be avoided or replaced by others by carrying out the proposed activities gradually, always respecting the pain threshold and the development of each individual.
We can conclude that aerobic, muscle building and flexibility activities are essential and proven effective components in the body program of people with degenerative spinal injuries when prescribed and performed correctly.
If you have any type of spine pathology, we recommend seeing a training professional who will develop a personalized plan according to your abilities and goals to get the most out of you!
The aim is to reduce the load on the damaged structure due to squat exercises and weight rotation, as they can worsen the clinical picture. Also avoid running or jumping until it stabilizes.
