Do you have the Zen bug? The longing for a calming place of peace where you can completely switch off and concentrate on nothing but yourself? In just 10 small steps, you can satisfy your inner yogi craving and create a relaxing retreat at home.
If you ask someone how they feel after a yoga retreat, they will all be filled with superlatives: relaxed, calm, enlightened, energized, at one with the earth, healthier, agile, calmed down. The list goes on.
You sleep like a baby after yoga and meditation sessions — so why not have your own soul-inspiring sanctuary? Here's how you can create a relaxing yoga and meditation retreat at home:
Plan ahead
Decide whether you will have your retreat indoors or outdoors. Choose your space carefully and avoid being close to busy roads or a rattling heater. Write down your ideas for the room and pay attention to the smallest details. This helps avoid distractions while meditating. It helps to plan your sessions in a journal just like any other important event — so your retreat time won't clash with anything else
Declutter your space
An empty space is an empty mind. Minimize your environment Do you see heaps of laundry and half-empty coffee cups in your yoga class? No Because the environment in which you feel most comfortable is one that is tidy and free from external factors that can be distracting and/or tripping hazards.
Prevent distractions
By that, we mean your loved ones, your children, and your animals. Ask family or friends if they can provide childcare or pet sitting for a specific period of time while you take that time for yourself. Imagine trying to meditate with your little ones asking you for juice and cookies, or your curious cats scratching at your door just to investigate why you dare shut them out. It won't work, right? Don't feel guilty asking for your own space — in the long run, this time will be beneficial for you and your loved ones.
Create a peaceful ambiance
That is very important. You want all of your senses activated and to the point so you feel relaxed and safe, especially when you're meditating. Think about lighting: Have it the way you like it and try adding scented candles, aroma lamps, or incense sticks. Place soothing objects you love in your yoga room, such as fresh plants in vases, wind chimes, or framed mantras.
Master your music playlist
Try creating a setlist with zen/relaxation music. Once again, prepare this in advance and keep a record of which music helped you in your powerful cobra pose or in your crazy Savasana. You're the only one who knows. If you're stuck, maybe the morning yoga playlist we've created will be useful.
Get rid of gadgets (or equip them properly)
Have you ever been to a meditation class and someone's phone rang? There's nothing worse than the “Crazy Frog” ringtone to disturb your peace of mind. Make sure that your landline is disconnected, your cell phone is muted, and even your fitness tracker isn't set to an alarm. If you're using technology for tutorials, switch calls and text messages to silent and make sure they're fully charged, because when your guided YouTube meditation comes to an abrupt end, it can really annoy you.
Dress comfortably
Can someone relax when a piece of their sportswear is stuck between body parts and it simply feels inappropriate? It's unlikely. Make sure your clothes are fit for purpose. Nothing too tight or restrictive, and nothing that fidgets around in your face while you're doing upside down positions.
Keep your devices close by
Have everything you need for your yoga or meditation practice close by. This includes your yoga blocks, mats, blankets, and anything else you need for your sessions.
Take care of your mind and body
Be careful not to exercise on an empty stomach, but your stomach should also not be full. Keep water close by so you can stay hydrated without disrupting your practice too much. When you make your home a retreat for yourself and others, make healthy snacks and refreshing drinks.
Select your favorite tutorial
Now that you've got a calming space, it's time to think about the actual sessions. Put your yoga tutorial in a yoga book, download some meditation apps, or create a YouTube yoga playlist to work your way through. Don't lose your inner peace while scrolling.
The grand finale of your yoga or meditation session at home should calm you down, fulfill, inspire you so that you can't be angry about anything afterwards. See how you can achieve this nirvana in a Holmes Place yoga class and then create it in your personal retreat.
