Halloween Special - Fight Your Fears

Halloween is supposed to be a scary night for kids. But the most fearful people in the world are actually — women. We'll help you overcome your fears!

Dr. Gina Barreca Say what no one wants to hear from us:”Anxiety is a matriarchy; anxiety is passed down through generations of mothers.”

Women's biggest fear: Ageing

Of course, we are primarily concerned about the important things: Our own health and that of our family, happiness and satisfaction — all of these factors are decisive. Apart from that, women fear getting older. And what do they fear most about it? Just anything. A recent study has revealed the following fears of women aged 18-77 years:

  • How will I deal with the loss of libido and intimacy?
  • I don't want to lose my beauty and feel pressured to have cosmetic surgery.
  • I'll never be able to deal with the pain of losing my partner.
  • I define myself through my work. If I ever lose my job and can't work anymore because of my age, who will I be?
  • What if I get old and poor? I don't want to live on the streets.
  • What if I'm going to be alone?
  • What if I can't even take care of myself anymore?
  • What if I get Alzheimer's?
  • What if I never have a partner/children/grandchild?

You can't escape the aging process and there is simply no alternative. So you can be afraid of it or appreciate life as it is and enjoy it. That setting is your choice. If your fears of potential poverty really reflect reality, then it is up to your current decisions as to whether you want to do something for your future safety.

The fear of public speaking
One of the most common fears among people of all genders and walks of life is speaking out in public. “You should approach this in small steps,” says author Laura Bates. The first step is to ask a question publicly. Commit yourself to small “speaking roles” in a pleasant environment, then work your way up. You don't have to imagine the audience naked, some of them look funny even when dressed.

The fear of failure
Let's assume that you have decided to always be “extremely intelligent,” “cheerful,” “full of energy,” etc. What happens when people who would like to impress you catch you in bad shape on “one of those days”? The solution is to treat yourself as you would treat a colleague at work. Support and accept yourself. We all have days like this and they're absolutely fine. “If you want to be a nice person, then you should also be kind to yourself,” says journalist Alix Fox.

Generalized anxiety disorder
Journalist Janice Turner says anxiety can creep into all sorts of situations and many women would agree because in some situations they get stressed out even though absolutely nothing has changed. Turner believes that the best way to deal with “generalized anxiety disorder” is exercise. Janice Turner loves swimming a kilometer or mastering a boot camp workout that tires her out. In fact, this is how she can unleash her mind. “No one has ever been happy from sitting around — go for a walk! ”
