Balance in Everyday Life: Travel, Health and Small aha Moments

Time out! Have you heard of the Pousada Do Porto (the Porto Hostel)? That's a good reason to head north!

Pousada do Ash — Ash Palace Hotel — is one of the local “must-visit” places selected by Taschen magazine, the US newspaper New York Times, the European Travel Guide Roadmap and The New York Times: 36 Hours, 125 Weekends in Europe.
The hostel is close to Freixo Palace, a beautiful example of Baroque Portuguese architecture that has been a national monument since 1910.
In October 2009, the first Pousada de Portugal was opened in the city of Invicta.
What a successful break!

Less technology — live better...
A study by the University of Alberta (Canada) shows that children with electronic devices in the bedroom have a significantly higher risk of becoming overweight.
The researchers established a causal link between these devices and a decline in sleeping hours. They added that just one extra hour of sleep could reduce the likelihood of these children becoming overweight by 30%.
Paul Veugelers, one of the authors of the study, advises all parents: “If you want your children to sleep better and lead a healthy lifestyle, remove the technology from their rooms. ”

Frankenstein could help us lose weight
It may be hard to believe, but watching a horror movie can actually help you lose weight.
A group of researchers from the University of Westminster (UK) wanted to find out whether you could burn calories watching a scary movie.
In their study, the researchers observed 10 people watching a selection of classic horror movies and found that they burned on average three times as many calories as in front of a blank screen.
Richard Mackenzie, a metabolism expert, explained that this phenomenon is due to the release of fast-acting adrenaline during short bouts of stress or anxiety — adrenaline, which dampens appetite and boosts metabolism.

The cheapest health care is...
... a multivitamin.
This is what Professor Balz Frei from the Linus Pauling Institute says.
According to the specialist, daily consumption of a multivitamin is enough to reduce the risk of cancer by 8%.
This statement is based on an extensive study on the positive effects of multivitamin supplementation on health.
However, researchers point out that a multivitamin is only a supplement and cannot replace a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Prevent early
A Portuguese study found that overweight children and adolescents were more likely to remain overweight even in adulthood than their slimmer peers.
The research presented to Congress, which is based on the observation of over 500 boys, ultimately showed that this risk increases with increasing age: A third of children under 6.5 years of age remained overweight between the ages of 6 and 11 years.
Even more worrying were the data on adolescents, where the proportion of those who maintained their excess weight rose to 80%.
Experts stress that the solution lies in prevention — which should start very early: during pregnancy and in the first years of a child's life.

Praise, praise, praise!
Try to praise your employees and colleagues!
According to a study from the National Institute for Physiological Sciences, praise is the social reward that promotes better performance when people feel that their efforts are being recognized.
All research shows that positive words have a powerful impact on the brain — resulting in top-quality work.
“Congratulations” and “Keep it up” are just a few examples you can try out.
Trying is better than studying!
